Express Mondor Counting on CNG Gas Savings

Late 2016, a Compressed Natural Gas CNG station in Lanoraie, QC, was completed by our sister company ComTech CNG. The station was designed to complement Express Mondor’s new truck fleet, as it looked to cut diesel fuel costs and reduce its carbon footprint.

The CNG station is the ninth station added to Quebec’s Blue Road, a trucking corridor for access to alternative fuels and represents a $3.5 million investment from GAIN Clean Fuel and Express Mondor.

In terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Quebec, the transportation industry (road, maritime, rail, air) tops the list, having generated 43.3% of total emissions in 2008. Freight transportation represents an important segment to be targeted with respect to GHG reduction, since diesel-fuelled heavy-duty trucks in service in Quebec are responsible for 28% of the total emissions produced by the sector as a whole. As natural gas generates some 25% less GHGs than diesel, it may contribute to substantially reducing GHG emissions.

Billy Mondor, vice-president of business development at Express Mondor, announced that the fleet intends to purchase 50 new CNG trucks over the next few years as they “continue to provide stellar service to our customers across North America while also improving our energy and environmental performance.”

Since November 2016, Mondor has noticed significant savings including fuel and maintenance costs.

After 12 months and a total of 600,000 kilometres of driving in cold, winter conditions and crossing the US border daily, I only experienced one shutdown with my 4 CNG tractors.

Express Mondor estimates they will continue to cut fuel costs and gain as much as 30% in efficiency per kilometer, in addition to decreasing GHG emissions by up to 25% with its new CNG tractors.
