TransLink Adds 106 CNG Buses to Surrey Fleet

The first of more than 106 new natural-gas-powered buses will hit the streets of Surrey this week.

The rollout means that by the end of the year, more than half of the city’s 209 buses will be new, running on clean energy and equipped with safety measures to protect drivers.

“This is a significant upgrade to the buses operating in Surrey and for the Surrey residents who rely on our transit system,” said Dan Savitsky, vice-president of maintenance for Coast Mountain Bus Company. “These buses represent a major renewal to the Surrey base fleet of 209 buses.”

Passengers will notice that the buses are quieter and air-conditioned. They will emit 13- to 21-per-cent less greenhouse gas than diesel buses, cost 60-per-cent less to fuel and last up to 200,000 kilometres longer.

Drivers will also be better protected, because the buses will be equipped with operator safety barriers.

Two of the 106 new buses are already in Surrey and a more are being prepared by the dealer. Three or four buses will arrive weekly through the end of 2018.
